Lovely market, a little tour and then...a truffle hunt?!?!?

Thursday morning we awoke to incredibly dense fog in the hills surrounding Pozzenga.  It was quite warm the day before and then cooled off considerably overnight.  This was my view this morning...

We strolled down to the main house and Mark and Carol were just preparing to leave.  Giorgio was very worried about Mark (and the sleeping pill incident of 2011), but he seemed fine and ready to go.  Because it was just Leah and I now, our day seemed to be a little more loosely planned.

The day before Leah was mentioning she might want to put hardwood flooring in her dining room, but was thinking of doing a parquet or something of the like.  Patrizia said we should go visit Bruno, the carpenter, as he does beautiful flooring.  So we drove down the hill to Bruno's workshop and it was pretty cool.

Lots of sawdust
These are oak beams taken from old homes or barns that he uses to make beautiful parquet floors.  Some of them are over 100 years old.
His planar machine where he cuts the old beams
He asked us to guess what this is going to be used for?  It's a turtle house apparently, that will hold 40-50 turtles.  Wow.
I am not going to put up the flooring photos, as I don't want to steal Leah's thunder if she decides to have him make them for her.  She is going to send him a drawing and the finalize pricing, etc.  So, we'll see how it pans out.  It would be really fantastic if it all works out, because Bruno does beautiful work.

From there Patrizia took us to Moncalvo, a little hill town not too far away from Pozzengo, as they were having their market this morning.  She drove us in the 'Ferrari' and we all were laughing that we might have to get out and push it up the hills.  She has such a lovely personality.

So, we got dropped-off and started walking up the cobblestone hill to the top where the market was happening.  As many of you know, I love local markets and always love seeing what can be found there.  Here's some photos...

It was a beautiful morning strolling through this quaint and lovely little village.  Leah bought a pair of shoes and we had such a nice time.  Giorgio picked us up and we returned to 5 Chimneys for lunch.

Lunch was delicious ~ homemade minestrone soup, arugula salad with balsamic vinegarette and provolone and bufala mozzarella cheese.  Wonderful.

We then took a little time to relax before Mario, the Vice Mayor of Pozzengo, arrived to take us on a tour of the local church and chapel.  This is where we attended the lovely concert on Sunday night when we arrived.  Mario is apparently the 'administrator' for the church and its chapel in Pozzengo, so he's the man to know.

The church is beautiful, simple and they take great pride in its history and maintenance.  Mario reportedly walks along the top 'rim' of the church (with a tiny little handrail) to rid it of spiderwebs, etc.  We were able to climb the little narrow staircase to get up to the organ/choir area and that was really amazing.  Leah even got to play the organ!!!  The organ was originally built in the 1700s and re-vamped recently.  What a neat experience!!
A view from the organ/choir loft...so pretty
The organ
Love the wooden keys

 Leah...rockin' the organ!!!
Their chapel which is down the hill a little bit.  Services are held here from April/May until October on Thursday nights, but due to the lack of heating are stopped over the winter.
This is a memorial located in the Chapel.  This was done by a family of a person who was crushed by a wagon when it tipped over, but they lived and therefore their family felt it to be a miracle.  This painting is in thanks for the miracle.
More memorial pictures and these crutches were used by someone many years ago and then began to walk again...a miracle!!
Such a nice hour that we had.  Mario, the Vice Mayor, is really nice and takes very good care of these two sacred buildings.  He has lived in Pozzengo for about 35 years.  They day he was born, his house was set on fire by the Nazis.  Interesting life.

So, our day was not done yet...oh no!  We were then going to go Truffle Hunting!!!  I am going to stop typing now and Leah is going to post on the Truffle Hunt, as it was quite an adventure.  It's something not to miss...stay tuned!!

Having a fantastic time...

xoxo
Stacy
